George A. Adjei, Esq.

George doubles as the Director of Health at the National Catholic Secretariat, Accra and the National Catholic Health Service.

George has over twenty years’ experience managing at various systems and levels of the health sector. Prior to assuming his current role, he provided technical leadership in Health Systems Management (with emphasis on human resources for health) for the NCHS for five years. He has participated in numerous international conferences as Presenter and/or Participant on quality and safety as well as others related to his work.

A trained Improvement Development Advisor, he leads the team at the Directorate to provide strategic leadership to the Service to achieve whole system transformation, employing Continuous Quality Improvement methods across all sub-systems for better health outcomes. These interventions have led to a remarkable 31% reduction in institutional under-five mortality within the Service between 2009 and 2015. Again, he led an improvement project to reduce billing errors in claims management under the National Health Insurance Scheme to less than 1% in 22 hospitals in six months in 2012, resulting in savings of over $ 100,000.

He again proposed the unique design and led the revamping of the pooled procurement programme of the NCHS in 2011, which has achieved no less than 25% savings on input costs (amounting to over $3m annually) and helped to reduce counterfeit medicines. George is further credited with revamping the business of the Catholic Medicines Centre since 2014 producing paracetamol syrup for NCHS facilities.

George’s role also brings him into very close working relations with other senior leaders of the Ghanaian health sector where he is well connected. He again advises the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference on health matters. He is a Board Member of the Christian Health Association of Ghana and Director of Quality Life Assurance Company Limited.

He holds the B. Sc. Administration and the Master of Business Administration (Research) in Health Services Management both awarded by the University of Ghana. He is also a Barrister at Law (Ghana) and Counselor-at-Law (New York State). He further holds a post-graduate diploma in Marketing awarded by the Chartered Institute of Marketing, UK.

He loves reading and gardening.
